CanIron VIII Demonstrator: Brian Russell

County Durham, England

Demonstrator Bio

Brain is a self-taught blacksmith who set up in business shortly after leaving art school. At first he was working in isolation and had only limited ideas about forging creatively. This changed when he became an active member of The British Artist Blacksmith Association in 1979. “I have benefitted from working with a lot of skillful journeymen and assistants over the years, many of whom now have their own business, these people enable me to work on larger projects, and kept me going with their enthusiasm.”

“I am quite happy producing any kind of work really, whether it be traditional gates or organic sculpture, as long as it involves forgework. It’s a privilege to make a living making and selling my own designs, and seeing the process through from concept sketch to installation... There are so many ways to approach the design, whether it should be modern or classical or somewhere in between. Symmetrical or otherwise, flat or 3D... I prefer to use traditional methods wherever possible. Regretfully sometimes it isn’t and modern techniques do come in useful sometimes.”

Brian has chosen to demonstrate the making of a simple gate for CanIRON VIII. He will have one demo session and two associated workshops, where more people can get directly involved. “We may finished or we may not, but the intention is to show how I work in my own forge, the major difference being the absence of a power hammer of any description. The exercise is bound to do me good as well.”
