CanIron VIII Demonstrator: Jake Powning

Markhamville, New Brunswick, Canada

Demonstrator Bio

Jake Powning is a professional swordsmith and artist who explores the strange place where traditional culture and the land meet. Jake has a well earned reputation internationally for both beauty and quality, with a body of past work sought by collectors the world over. Each blade is an assemblage, the details of carvings flowing from scabbard to hilt to fittings and echoed in the lines of pattern welding.

“I make swords in the Celtic and Norse styles and it is my aspiration to keep searching and refining my pieces to capture the magic and grim beauty of those ancient swords. I strive to work towards the same standards of quality that historical smiths exhibit in their work and to make swords which are infused with my personality, and the energy that is given by a craftsman to an original piece, while remaining informed by a historical tradition.”

At CanIRON VIII, Jake will illustrate the creation of a composited pattern welded sword billet. The second demonstration will show the process of gravity poured bronze casting for decorative fittings. His lecture will feature his past work and the historic sources that inspire it.
