CanIron VIII Demonstrator: Mark Puigmarti

Port Perry, Ontario, Canada

Demonstrator Bio

Mark is a self-taught blacksmith/artist, who began forging metal in 1994. His attraction to this crafts energy and creative potential was immediate and ultimately life altering. Working first as a Refrigeration Journeyman provided him with a technical hands on approach, which would later prove invaluable. It eventually also helped with surviving the gradual transition to the realized dream of smithing full time. Originally from Toronto, he is now established near Port Perry where he operates Sparks Will Fly Forge. His diverse scope of work can be found in public and private collections both locally and abroad.

“I am just beginning to realize the amazing fundamental similarities that fellow blacksmiths share. I am not unique. My approach may differ from some, but the core values seem to coincide unanimously. Just read any blacksmith’s thoughts about their work and you will see some reflection of yourself in those words. My learning and sharing of ideas is part of the excitement and essential to my own artistic growth. Ideas spawn more ideas and so on. More power to the blacksmith bond! Oh yeah and WORK MORE - SLEEP LESS!”

Working alone and forging larger materials can provide it’s advantages and it’s challenges. Mark’s demonstration will focus on hand forging larger stock using simple tools. While creating components for a free form sculptural piece he will explore the possibilities of design, and describe his approach to working.
