CanIron VIII Demonstrator: Paul Allen

Motcombe, Dorset, England

Demonstrator Bio

Paul considered becoming a silversmith but the lure of the countryside led him to take up an apprenticeship in blacksmithing. Aged 26 he took on the challenge of using his skills to train blacksmiths in England for Council for Small Industries in Rural Areas (COSIRA). National UK Champion Blacksmith in 1994, Paul is a certificated Licentiate teacher, Silver Medal holder and Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Blacksmiths and a Licentiate of the City & Guilds Institute. Now a part-time tutor at the National School of Blacksmithing in Hereford, Paul specializes in producing original designs for interiors using only pure forgework techniques. Materials are chosen which enable delicate designs to be worked by hand; creating natural flow and balance within the practical function, his designs are often inspired and influenced by natural shapes and forms.

“I delight in the ability to use processes which are unique to our craft, with the belief that in this way we are putting our own personality into our work and it is through this we develop our own individual style.”

Paul’s first demonstration piece will be a ‘three dimensional flower with fire welded stem and leaves made using pure forgework techniques”. For his second session, he will be illustrating making the scrollwork for mounting an acanthus leaf. This will be a preamble to his workshop session, where he will guide participants through the process of making a decorative acanthus leaf.
