At the January Meeting...

Thak will be hosting an OABA meeting for members January 14th, 2006 at their shop in Floradale. Robb will be doing a short demonstration followed by open forge time (7 forges available). It will be a casual atmosphere allowing beginners to experiment and get advice from Robb and other smiths. Refreshments will be provided. Blacksmith coal and supplies are available for sale. They have had a busy year and look forward to attending meetings in the new year to get to know the association better.

The February meeting will be held at Waldie's blacksmith shop in Milton, Ontario on February, 11th, 2006. Kevin Peffers of Plane and Anvil Ltd. will be doing a demo for us as well as Darwyne Hourie.

Kevin would like to focus on free hand scrollwork. Concepts will include: -Discussion on what goes into a good looking scroll. -Forging a variety of scroll ends. -Getting to the scroll body you want without the use of a jig.

Depending on time and interest we could work on a mini project, getting people involved and working on techniques they want to workout.

!!!!PLEASE NOTE THE DATES!!!!

"OABA is pleased to announce that Takayoshi Komine of Japan will be visiting Canada for the first time, and will be leading Ontario blacksmiths in a workshop at Sharpe's Creek Forge. We hope to have a gallery of work collected for display in the community and a number of exciting events planned for the membership. Stay tuned for more information and your chance to volunteer to make this an event to remember. "

(B. Cook)

"Takaoshi Komine was born in Tokyo in 1950. He attended the Mushashio Art University, before studying in Germany in the late 1970's. His work has been shown in Japan. Europe and North America.   In July of 2005, Mr Komine will be demonstrating at the Artist Blacksmith Association of North America conference in Seattle. Because of the timing of the conference, OABA will be able to bring him to Ontario for what should prove to be an amazing weekend of blacksmithing. He has traveled arudn the world demonstrating and creating his sometimes massive works of art. At the OABA workshop he will be creating a special work, as the basis of the workshop. OABA members will have the chance to participate in the creation of this special work."

September meeting:
Saturday, Sept.9th/06

The AGM (Annual General Meeting)
will be held at Raymond Boyd's in Vineland, Ontario
Here are written directions (from Ray via Bob Cook)

"  I live at 3786 Tintern rd. near Vineland.Take the QEW( Niagara from west, Toronto from east). Get off at Victoria ave. Vineland reg rd 24. Turn south on Victoria (away from the lake).go 3 miles to Moyer rd (only goes right. watch for sign for Vineland Estates winery). take Moyer for 1.5 miles to (second intersection) Tintern rd. turn left. I am second house on the right (only 3 houses on road). If coming from top of escarptment use Fly rd.(mud st.). turn north onto Tintern rd. go .5 mile. still second house on left. If you still can't find me call :  home phone is 905 562 1716 (note change!) & my cel number is 905 323 5344.

You can get a map from Mapquest if you enter the address as 3786 Tintern Rd. Vineland, Ont.

For this AGM, I have talked to Moore-Mcleary and they said it would probably be no problem to open on Saturday for us but to call in August to confirm. Pea coke is still $6 per 100 lb. Also they would like to know approximately how many will be coming. Easiest would to have people e-mail me approximately how much they would be getting i.e. truck load, feed bags, or what ever. They could call and leave a message also but I sometimes don't get my messages.

On a different subject, We have 1/2 acre with a fair amount of room so if people wanted to pitch a tent that would be no problem. There is definately room for a hammer-in, but only two big trees so you will have to arm wrestle for shade. I have 2 permenant forges inside and 1 rivetters forge for outside. Neighbours are sparse and children are many, with a large fire pit a bon fire will happen if people stay or not.  "

Bob (da Prez) wanted to remind everyone: "Don't forget to bring your meat and/or veggies for the "blacksmith stew"."
