A record of OABA past meetings- 2007

January meeting:
Sat. and Sun. January,13 and 14, 2007
Jim Wallace's, Sharpe's Creek Forge

Come join us for the entire weekend or just come for one of the days as we continue on the benches from the Takayoshi Komine workshop of last July. It may be difficult to recreate the momentum and energy, but Jim has opened his shop to OABA once again as we try to complete Taka's vision of linking the three benches together. This should lead to a possible installation date of late May or early April.

You are on your own for accomodations if you want to help out both days. Check out  tourism@goderich.ca or phone 1-800-280-7637 for a list of hotels/motels in the area.

February meeting:
Saturday, February,10,2007

Our annual meeting at Waldie's Blacksmith Shop in Milton, Ontario. Please contact a member of the executive if you want to demonstrate. More details in the Jan/Feb newsletter.

March meeting:
Saturday, March, 10, 2007
Bob and Shirley Young's, Ancaster, Ontario

We are planning a group project that will culminate in a coffee table that we will donate to the Vancouver Island Blacksmith Assoc. for auction at Caniron VI at the end of June. Your contribution of a "panel" that is no larger or smaller than 6" sq or 6" in diameter is neccessary. These panels can be made of any size of material (3/8" rd, 1"X1/4" flat bar, 1/2" sq. etc...) but must maintain a dimension of  6" outside to outside so we can join them together to create the table top. We will then fabricate the rest of the table in a one day workshop. More info on this project will be available at the meetings.

Hi Everyone
Just decided we can have a "Blacksmith Stew" at March mtg if Kevin and Darrell would be so kind as to add the fact to the mtg info before the next issue of the Trillium is published.
Meat & veggies ready for the pot please.
Directions to our place: Between Hamilton and Brantford take "Copetown" exit off Hwy #403. Turn the opposite direction to Copetown and follow Grand River Dinner Cruises sign to the south crossing Garner Rd following Trinity Rd which becomes Sawmill Rd then turn south (still following the Dinner Cruise sign) on Brant Rd 22 to #285 on the right just past the old orchard. (GO HERE for a map)
Thanks
Shirley

May meeting:
Saturday, May,12, 2007
Les and Diane Fairhurst's Frankford, Ontario
"... regarding the May meeting ... we could have a hammer-in at my place. My thoughts were that while the table was being worked on, there wouldn't be much for others to do except just socialize ... I don't have a particular project in mind for a hammer-in, I suppose each attendee could do their own thing or someone might have something special in mind. That's O.K. with me. I have a supply of material on hand if someone needs some. ... The directions ... were published in the last news letter and I expect the next one also. Blacksmith stew is on the menu for lunch..."

"... for those who
may not receive the news letter I would suggest that the directions
to our shop be included. Here they are::::::::::

From Hwy #7
Go south on Hwy 14 From Marmora to Stirling. Turn right at the stop light
and go to the Esso Station. Turn left and continue to Frankford.Turn right and
cross the bridge and continue straight through town to the hamlet of
Stockdale.Watch for the "to Zion Road" sign and turn right. KEEP RIGHT
and continue over the hills to # 851. ( 3rd place past the little bridge).

>From Hwy # 401
Leave the Hwy at exit # 525. Go north on Cty Rd # 33To the village of
FRANKFORD. Turn left at the stop light and continue out of town
to the hamlet of STOCKDALE. Continue as above. "

I want to take the day in looking at basic armouring. I've always had a thing for a well tailored suit... I want to demonstrate what we as blacksmiths can use in the armouring field, like rolling edges or fluting, it'll be riveting ,and its not as scary as one thinks. I will be demoing on a few simple pieces the basic techniques.
There is enough space for a decent Hammer in. So bring your portables peoples, lets make some noise!! I am trying also to see if I can possibly get a different kind of demonstrator to come out.. but I shall confirm before I elaborate on that one...part of one of my other hobbies...deals with the armour thing...
There is some space for camping if there is a need but it is a first reserve basis so email me about that at ironsunset@rogers.com I am also hoping to have a blacksmith stew that day as well.

October/2007 Monthly meeting

Saturday, October, 20, 2007

** CANCELED **

I got a phone call from Mitchell this morning (Sept 15) with the sad news that he has had to CANCEL this session due to unforseen personal events. He will be in the process of moving his workshop over the next couple of weeks. (Beware - he may be hitting some of us up for a helping hand!) He feels pretty bad about having to bail on the session. Please pass the word if you know others who were planning to attend.

December Event

** EVENT DETAILS **

The Christkindl Market in Kitchener runs from Thursday, Dec. 6 to Sunday, Dec. 9, 2007. OABA will be present for the fifth year to demonstrate the art of blacksmithing. The participating demonstrators are invited to bring and sell some of their items. The Blacksmith demonstration is a very popular part of the Market - the forge is always surrounded by lots of spectators.
Kitchener-Waterloo has a large German/European population and the Christkindl Market has been a tradition for centuries. The Market is a great place to shop for Christmas gifts. We hope to see a lot of members there.
