April

To all blacksmiths, friends of blacksmiths, wannabe blacksmiths, artists, Friends of Morningstar Mill and the general public

The Ontario Artists Blacksmith Association will be holding its monthly meeting at Morningstar Mill here in St Catharines on April 18 from 9 to 3. This meeting will be an excellent opportunity for anyone who is interested to see the work being produced by today's blacksmith. The exhibition will consist of a "Hammer In" where smiths use their portable forges to demonstrate items they have been working on as well as to share tricks of the trade. It is a great learning experience for everyone, so please feel free to come out for a visit.

(John added this note)

We are getting low on Coke at the mill and the last time OABA came we had some extra for sale. I have been looking for a new source since the one here in St Catharines is now out of it. Alcarb Resources Inc who do not like to sell small amounts have just called to let me know that they now have some back in stock and have reserved a 1/2 ton for us. We will get it as soon as possible next week so we will once again have some extra to sell at the meeting. Bring your own bags and pails. It will cost us .20 cents a pound plus gas and time to go get it. If it sounds alright to you I think we will ask 30 cents per pound with the extra 10 cents being a donation to the mill and the shop.

(just in - a public announcement of that meeting)

April 18th at Morningstar Mill, living museum, 2710 DeCew Rd. in St Catharines. There will be a special display of blacksmithing and the works of some of the members of the Ontario Artist Blacksmith Association. This is the date of our monthly meeting which travels around the province and all visitors are welcome to come out and see our work as well as the blacksmith shop at the mill. Visit www.morningstarmill.ca for directions 10 to 3. The 1872 mill and the 1894 house will all be open to the public. This is a great day trip with lots of picnic space and hiking trails. As usual there is no admission charge but donations of any amount are very much appreciated to help The Friends of Morningstar Mill continue the restoration and maintenance of the site. It has been two years since the meeting was last here so make sure you do not miss it. For more information call 905-688-6050

OABA members are invited to The Heritage Power and Country Festival athe Cumberland Heritae Village Museum in Ottawa on May 30 and 31.

OABA members have been maintaining and operating the blacksmith shop here since 1995. The museum interprets the 1930's Depression era, a time frame that is unique in North America. Weather permiting we will be using a 7 horsepower Fairbanks-Morse engine to power the Canadian Giant power hammer. (weather not permitting we will be using that new fangled electric motor)

There is lots of room for portables, with some space under cover. All are welcome to set up, but as the Museum is a Municipal site I will have to sigh you up as a volunteer for the day.

As it is planting season the theme of the day will be agriculture. What interesting tools can you make for the garden? I will be demonstrating two different ways to make a trowel.

Lunch will be provided and there will be a barbeque on Saturday night. Rough camping is available on the site. Please RSVP so i know how much food to get

The village has 28 buildings showing rural life in the 1930's including a church, schoolhouse sawmill and pump factory.. The power show will have dozens of exibitors with antique machinery and vehicles--be sure to check out the steam powered rock crusher. In addition the Lion's Club will be providing entertainment both days, so there is lots to see and do.

June
Saturday, June,13,2009
The meeting for this month is being hosted by OABA member Henk Boon in Desboro,Ontario. It will take place on Saturday,June,13,2009. Watch this space for details as they become available.

(This message just in)

Howard Budd is not on the web but I'm pushing him to come into the light. So in the interm time I am sending this on his behalf and our group in Grey Bruce.

If anyone needs more info contact me via my email or phone (519) 364 2916. Just be aware that from the 14th April to 19 April 2009 I will be away with work in Alberta and will not be able to answer any of your questions but I will try and reply by Sunday 20 April 2009 once I'm home again.

Daniel Linkenheld
Your fellow in Iron Pounding.

(enclosed announcement)

Friday, April 10, 2009
Sirs,
Just an update for the newsletter about the O.A.B.A. meeting we have planned for June 13th at Hank Boon’s farm

( fire# 056576 )
Concession 12 Sideroad 2 directly west of Chatsworth on County Road 40. When County Road 40 goes south to Desboro you go off of it and proceed 4 Km West on Sideroad 2 over Grey County Road 3 and then go north on Concession 12 and it’s the first driveway on your right.
Watch for OABA signs.

The following demonstrators will be there with their forges,
Howard Budd
Howard is going to demonstrate forge welding of high carbon steels into projects of various types. Then doing an acid etch to show how the pattern welded steel turns into visible layers of the steels in the finished projects depicting the multiple shades of grey to black. Howard will discuss the etchant used and the concentrations and time allotted for the etch.
Howard is going to discuss where to obtain the different types of steel used and how economical it can be for us.
Daniel Linkenheld
Dan is going to demonstrate figure carving in steel with different punches created for the tasks. Dan is going to make a horse face and tail with a horse shoe as well as a wizard letter opener.
Dave Kritz
Dave is going to demonstrate proper technique for splitting hot metal and punching holes in hot metal.
Doug McEwing
Doug is going to demonstrate cold manipulation of steel into useful projects for the home and yard using machines he has designed and built for the purpose.
Jim Buchanan
Jim will be demonstrating how to make a poinsettia candle holder.

Iron in the Hat
We are requesting that all members that are attending bring a handmade piece of their work for iron in the hat. This has proven to be an effective fund raiser for our association and we believe is supporting our own. There is nothing better than taking home a treasure that a fellow member created with his own hands.
Brag Table
We will be setting up a brag table and urge all our members to bring along a recent project they have finished to inspire us all. There is no better way to network than showing who you are and what you can do while having your talents bragged about by your fellow blacksmiths and having your specific talents passed on to prospective buyers.
Lunch
A hot roast beef on a bun lunch with all the trimmings will be served at noon for a cost of $5.00 ea. Doug McEwing will be showcasing the big barbeque he built and has volunteered to roast some good Grey County beef for us.
We have ordered up a bright sunny day but if things are not favourable for us, there is a large area under a roof for us where we can forge. And there is a functioning outhouse on site.
This is going to be a “hands on” meeting and we encourage everyone to bring a forge. If you can’t we will have 6 to 8 forges set up and everyone will have a chance to make a horse shoe hook (horse shoes supplied) or a candle stick holder ( we will have some blanks cut out ) or bring your own project that you may want to work on.
This should be a fun and educational meeting. We have a little gourp that gets together every so often and share ideas and pound some iron. We always have a lot of fun and hope to share some of our enthusiasm with you.
This will be our first time hosting a general meeting, so don’t be surprised if we have a few jitters and butterflies. We have learned much from you and hope you will be able to take something from us back with you.

Accomodations
If you would like to come a day early and stay a day longer you can camp in Hank’s yard. His phone number is (519) 934-3273.
Also if you like to play a musical instrument guitar or fiddle etc bring it along for a little music.

CanIRON VII will be held at Ness Creek (Saskatchewan) on August 7-9. ...
Looks like we have Adrian Legge from England, he will be teaching a
class there the day after.

... The idea is to have 4 demo areas with only two going at anyone time.
Another proposed area will be a hands on hands on affair with the design and
execution of a piece that will become a permanent part of the site. Ideas
knocked around were a totem or like the BABA piece of a few years ago, maybe
a gate. ...

Information as it arrives - CANIRON VII

(webmasters note: There is a web stite for the Ness Creek Music Festival which does include some information about this site)

SEPTEMBER

Once again this year we will have a few forges running at the Russell Fair, located in the Village of Russell in Eastern Ontario (about a half-hour south-east of Ottawa). Our dates this year are Saturday Sept. 12th and Sunday Sept. 13th. If any OABA members want to join us they are more than welcome -- we've had pretty good turn-outs these past couple of years.
As in past years, passes and refreshments will be provided to all demonstrators. Come for as little or as much time as you like. Tables can be provided if you want to set up a display.
For more information please contact Scott Cluett (scott@createcode.com or 613 448 1745 in the evening)

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER, 19, 2009

Location: Jim Wallace's: Sharp's Creek Forge in Goderich, Ontario. Check out Jim's new website at: www.sharpscreekforge.ca

Come help Jim celebrate 30 years in the blacksmithing business. As one of OABA's founding fathers, Jim is a life member of OABA and a friend to us all. There may, or may not be, a guest demonstrator as some details are still not available. This could be a two day event if all plans come together. Stay tuned for more info. Watch the website for details.

The AGM meeting at Jim's will be a one day affair with the AGM elections taking up most of the morning. We will take a break for lunch ( Bring your own!!!) at the noon hour.

There will be an open forge after lunch and Jim will open his forge to anyone who expresses interest. This is your chance to do some work under his power hammer. If you've got some material that needs drawing out or textured, now is the time.

Everyone is welcome to bring their own tools and material and do a demo for us as well.

The meeting should take us to the dinner hour ( 5:00 or 6:00 pm) where we are than invited to Jim's cottages just north of the Town of Goderich. We will cook up a feast of burgers and hotdogs for those that attend, and end the evening with a bonfire and fireworks down on the beach.

Jim tells me there is plenty of space for those who wish to pitch a tent and spend the night.

Bring your own lawnchairs and beverages.

Don't forget a donation for Iron-in-the-Hat.

Directions to Sharpe's Creek Forge are elsewhere on the web page as well as in previous issues of the Iron Trillium.
