My chosen medium is iron. It's plasticity when hot allows for the creation of limitless
design and structure. It's solidity when cold offers a longevity not possible with
many other materials. This can be both a blessing and a curse. Good work will last
many lifetimes, and so unfortunately, will poor work. The challenge then is to make
every piece my best, something worthy of the material, and to maintain standards
of design and craftsmanship which will not become easily dated. I seldom make more
than one of any article. If I repeat a design it is never quite the same, constantly evolving
as I discover better, or more interesting , ways of proceeding. Every piece I make
teaches me something about this material and about myself as an artisan. In a world
filled with mass produced, unexceptional, throw-away dross, I try and produce only those
items which I think may have some lasting value.
